Porterhouse and the man who bought his favourite steakhouse

Sol Forman found a direct way to preserve his favourite steakhouse: he bought it.

Sol Forman found a direct way to preserve his favourite steakhouse: he bought it. According to Peter Luger’s own history, the purchase took place at auction in 1950. Forman liked taking his customers there. The restaurant’s famous porterhouse combines strip and tenderloin on either side of the bone. It resembles a T-bone, but has a larger tenderloin section.

The purchase story comes from the restaurant’s own account. When distinguishing porterhouse from T-bone, the tenderloin section matters, rather than simply the steak’s overall size or the shape of its bone.
